That's not just a trend; it's a seismic shift in how people discover information. Social media isn't just for selfies and memes anymore. It's a powerful search tool that's redefining consumer behavior.

Google's dominance is dipping, if only slightly. Its market share in search has dropped by 2% in the last year alone—although it's still over 90%, according to Search Engine Land. While that might not sound like much, let's harken back to a similar situation in the world of browsers.

It's hard to imagine now, but back in the early 2000s, Microsoft's Internet Explorer held a staggering 95% of the market share for browsers. It was so dominant that it seemed untouchable and was the go-to browser for almost everyone logging on to the internet. But fast forward to today, and Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer's replacement, has only 5% of the browser market.

The decline of Explorer serves as a stark reminder that even the most dominant tech players can fall.

So, what's driving the decline in Google? It's likely a few key factors, all of which tie into how user behavior and expectations are evolving:

1) Visual and interactive content. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok offer a richer, more engaging experience than traditional search engines. People, especially younger generations, are gravitating toward these platforms because they provide quick, visual answers that are often more appealing than text-heavy search results.

2) Personalization. Social media algorithms are incredibly good at curating content based on user preferences, making search results more relevant and tailored. Google does personalize to some extent but it's still largely driven by keywords and search engine optimization (SEO), which can sometimes feel less intuitive compared to the personalized feeds users get on social media.

3) Trust and social proof. Users increasingly trust recommendations and information shared by influencers or peers on social media. They're looking for real-world experiences, reviews and recommendations, which they can easily find on social platforms compared to Google's more formal search results.

4) Convenience. Many people are already spending a lot of time on social media, which means it's just more convenient to search within the platforms they're already using. This reduces the need to switch to a different app or browser to find what they're looking for.

If you're not optimizing your social media profiles, you're leaving money on the table. Here are some practical tips to get you started:

  • Optimize your profiles. Make sure your social media profiles are complete, consistent and reflect your brand's voice.
  • Create good content. Focus on visual and engaging content that grabs attention and encourages interaction.
  • Leverage hashtags and keywords. Use relevant hashtags and keywords to increase your visibility in social media searches.
  • Engage with your audience. The more you interact with your followers, the more likely they are to search for and engage with your content.
