The dust has largely settled on the 2024 U.S. election and, by all accounts, the Republican Party had a very good night, capturing the White House and U.S. Senate and protecting their slim majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. Several House races are yet to be called in Alaska, California and Iowa, but their outcome will not affect Republican congressional control.

The Big “I" government affairs team works diligently to build and nurture relationships with members of Congress and candidates running for federal office. This effort is crucial to advancing the interests of the independent agency system and ensuring that the voices of agents and brokers are heard loud and clear in Washington D.C. A key tool in this effort is InsurPac, the Big “I" federal political action committee.

This election cycle, InsurPac disbursed $2.5 million to 278 federal campaigns, winning at least 268 of them for a 96% victory rate. In disbursing this money, InsurPac did not look at party affiliation. As always, it gave money to representatives, senators and candidates who were running for federal office and have been friends and advocates of the independent agency system.

InsurPac takes pride in impacting races that involve independent agents and friends of the insurance industry, and this election was no different. In the Senate, InsurPac weighed in heavily for Rep. John Curtis (R-Utah), whose father was a Big "I" member. He was elected to the Senate. In the House, InsurPac supported insurance commissioner Troy Downing, and helped him navigate a contentious primary and ultimately win his House race for the 2nd District in Montana.

As with every election, the insurance industry saw some friends and allies defeated, such as Sen. Jon Tester (D-Montana), a former Big “I" legislator of the year. These races are an important reminder that our champions in Congress cannot be taken for granted. They must have the necessary financial resources to win reelection.

As we move forward, it is vital to remember that political advocacy is an ongoing effort. The relationships we build today, combined with the financial resources we invest through InsurPac, will ensure that our industry's voice remains a powerful force in the halls of Congress.
