Ashley Stafford
Insurance Advisor
Williams Insurance Agency Inc.
Rehoboth Beach, Delaware
Stafford was laid off from a logistics company during the coronavirus pandemic. After a friend posted a vacancy at Williams Insurance Agency, she jumped headfirst into all the opportunities an insurance career has to offer, quickly advancing from a customer service role into an advisory role.
Drawing on her experiences in other customer service positions, as well as acting aspirations that included being an extra in HBO's “John Adams" miniseries, Stafford always strives to “turn challenges into opportunities and prioritize exceptional customer service," she says.
In her short insurance career, Stafford has acquired the certified professional insurance agent (CPIA) designation and was recognized as a 2023 Young Agent Mover and Shaker by Insurance Agents & Brokers (IA&B). Now, she's looking forward to continuing her dedication to customer service and spreading the word about career opportunities in insurance.
How has managing the front desk benefited your role as an insurance advisor?
Managing the front desk is crucial because first impressions are so important. If the first person a client speaks to is pleasant, it sets a positive tone for their experience with our agency. I emphasize customer service and teaching our front desk team to be helpful and friendly.
Advantages of being a woman in sales?
Women bring a different perspective and approach to the table, excelling in building strong, trust-based relationships with clients. We tend to be more empathetic, which is crucial in understanding clients' needs, and we have strong communication and active listening skills. Seeing the growth of women in sales is exciting and I'm proud to be part of that movement.
Using your acting experience in your current role?
While I don't act with my clients, my background in acting helps me adapt to what my clients need. I study my clients before meeting them, ensuring I'm knowledgeable about their needs. This ability to mold myself to fit their expectations helps build strong relationships.
How did you go about increasing your knowledge of the insurance industry?
I have completed numerous continuing education (CE) classes and recently earned my CPIA designation. I also learn a lot from my colleagues and my clients' unique needs. Additionally, my involvement with the IA&B has provided valuable learning experiences through trips and events where I meet other agents.
Tell us about the Movers and Shakers award. What is it and why were you nominated?
My mentor, Patty Walker, nominated me for the Agent of the Year award, but since I had been in insurance for under two years and lacked certain qualifications, I was awarded the Movers and Shakers award instead. This recognition is for individuals who are making significant strides in their roles. It's one of the highlights of my career, solidifying my passion for the industry and opening many doors for me.
What do you enjoy most about being an independent insurance agent?
I love the opportunity to assist a diverse range of businesses and clients, tackling unique risks and challenges. It's fulfilling to be involved in the community and not be confined to a desk all day. I look forward to a long career in this field.
What are your future career aspirations?
I aim to earn more designations and have a long, fulfilling career as an insurance advisor. Ideally, I'd love to one day own an insurance agency if the opportunity arises. Additionally, I hope to mentor young agents, sharing the importance of this career and its opportunities. Recently, I visited a middle school to spread the word about the exciting prospects in the insurance industry.
